A lot goes into planning a trip. You make quite a few decisions about where to go on your trip. Sometimes those plans are based upon what you heard or read about the location or perhaps it is just a desire you have to get to that certain location. Then you review the maps and plan your route to get to that location and depending upon the amount of time you have planned, your decision is based upon either the fastest route or the most interesting or scenic route. You may decide what side trips you plan that take you off your original route based on time or distance from the route. And all the time you continue to gather memories along the way. Depending on how you plan and travel you have either followed your itinerary perfectly or your interest in one location may have had you branching off in a few other directions and altering the itinerary along the way.
If only the rest of life were that simple. It all starts with the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It moves on to questions about your choice of college, then your plans for life with a partner and perhaps a family. Then there are all those decisions about using your skills in the work environment for the next 40 or 50 years of your life. We move on to the question of when to retire, where to retire, and what to do in retirement. So much can change along the way, just as on that one or two week vacation that never seems to end up exactly as planned. Life brings us so many choices that clearly defining that plan is not possible.
Life is a moving target because every decision we make may have an effect on the rest of our lives. Where you are right now in your life is probably not going to be where you are in the future. The job you are doing today is most likely not the job you will be doing in just five years. We need to keep a perspective of our goals for the future, but we have to be fluid enough to accommodate for changes along the way. We need to realize that every decision we make in our life, may have a life changing impact on our future.
Be prepared for the journey by having a plan, but know and understands that plans can change. When the journey changes directions, get yourself back on track or be willing to divert you journey in a new direction. Either way, every day is a new adventure.
