We all know what to do with our computers when they start moving a bit slow, or hanging on the same calculation for too long…we just reboot! Restart that old computer and get it moving in the right direction. Everything seems to work a bit more smoothly and we can begin to focus on the tasks at hand, rather than the problems that have crept into the computer and kept it from running smoothly. I can’t tell you how many times I have to reboot electronic gadgets throughout week. The smart television won’t load, just reboot. The phone stopped connecting with my watch, just reboot. So many times the easiest solution is to just turn something off and restart it to get it working again.
It seems like something so easy could have some implications in our own lives. Perhaps the self help books need only two sentences; “Did you turn it off?” and “Did you turn it back on again?” Our minds work in some very strange ways. We can become obsessed with a problem or an issue and just be fixated on the issue. Rather than work through the problem, we just mull over the problem but never really work on the solution. The problem keeps looping through our mind but we seem to never get any closer to the solution. For days, weeks, even months we just keep running through or into the same problem. Our mind just spins on the problem and we are unable to identify the solution.
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you’ve always gotten.” is a quote (or variation of a quote) that has been associated with quite a few people over the years including the likes of Jessie Potter, Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Henry Ford, and Tony Robbins to name a few. But the one thing this quote doesn’t identify is the cycling that goes on in our mind that causes us to keep repeating what we have always done. So I bring to you a new quote for your life to help you reboot, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”
Perhaps what we really need is a way to reboot our brain, take a step back from the issues at hand, move on to other thoughts and ideas so that we can then restart our contemplation of an issue with a fresh mind. How many times have you been trying to think of a word, unable to find the right one? For hours you may focus on that thought and never find the word, yet hours later as you are in the yard doing something else or driving along the road the exact word you were looking for pops into your mind. Stepping away, rebooting your brain with other thoughts helped you get to just the right word.
But we fail to reboot in our life so many times. We get stuck in a rut. Perhaps it is a job that isn’t what we thought it was, perhaps it is an activity we are engaged in for all the wrong reasons, perhaps it is the struggle with alcohol or drugs. We must take the time to reboot our lives so that we can begin to focus on the changes that need to be made with a fresh view of the world around us.
As you journey through life, remember…you may need a reboot from time to time.
